Music Magazine Double Spread Page-Textual Analysis

Props

There is two props in this picture the first is the bed that Jamelia is sitting on the bed i think connotes comfort and maybe a little seductive because today the bed connotes sex solely because there is an attractive person in the picture also. In the next picture on the left you see her wearing a hat which seems quite casual.

Lighting

Lighting is very well done in this picture and very unique because the picture on the right page you have high-key lighting on one half of the page but the other half the lighting is low-key because a lot of the writing is on this side so this makes it easier to read although you can still see the picture through this bit of the page. Also on the other side of the page the whole page is low-key I am presuming because there is much more writing on the page but where Jamelia's name is high-key lighting you can see the true colours of the picture.

Costume

What she is wearing on the right you cant really see but it looks that it just a very short dress creamy white a little cut a the front but you don't really see any of the chest but because she is wearing a short dress type clothing this could be very seductive because she is very attractive and is wearing a short dress and sitting on a bed. The picture on the left she is wearing a bikini and a very low cut top which is again quite attractive and seductive because you can see her cleavage. Also a hat so it seems that she would be at a casual event or setting.With the make-up and her eyebrows done up shows that these things are done to attract the opposite sex.

NVC

The picture on the right her facial expression show she is relaxed and happy also there seems to be a slight hint of mischievousness. In the picture on the left she looks just relaxed and happy with a big smile which is directed at the people looking at the magazine.

Setting

In the first picture it quite clear that she is in bedroom and it looks comfortable and the background seems to be quite luxurious so it shows that she is rich in the next picture from her costume which is a bikini it connotes swimming pool or beach but in this case I think its the beach because her surroundings seem natural because it looks like she standing next a tree. It is a bit hard to tell because the background is blurred out so it probably means that the background isn't that important because it is blurred out to nearly beyond recognition.

Music Magazine Textual Analysis

Props
In this Music Magazine there aren’t any props on the page so the Magazine wants us to concentrate on the person
Lighting
The lighting in the picture seems high-key but because of the dark brown colour it’s like a confused setting but you can tell that the light is coming from the above because there is a shadow underneath her chin and her raised arm.

Costume
The dress Beyoncé is wearing is quite dark but shows off a lot of cleavage which would obviously attract the opposite sex and also attract other women to buy this magazine and find out how to look as good as her also because she is very attractive this also attracts her audience. She is wearing hoops and a ring her nails are all done up and her eye brows are shaped also she has a lot of make-up her hair done up to attract the opposite sex so this is a sex appeal and because she looks ‘ Sexy’ people will want to pick it up see what the magazine about.
NVC
Her NVC is quite clear she looks very serious and if you look at the magazine and what it’s saying around her it says ‘The green issue’ so lots of people are taking this issue very seriously and saying that we have to be a greener world. So this would explain her NVC. Also her body position it seems quite aggressive but calm because her hands are both fists but one is raised and pointing in front of her which seems like she is threatening as the magazine is about ‘Being Greener’

Setting
The setting is very bland and there isn’t anything happening around her the camera shot I would say is just about a mid-shot to a long mid shot because it doesn’t stop right at her waist it goes down alittle bit further probably more of a mid-shot though. I think the reason why the magazine wanted not much going on in the magazine is because they wanted us to focus on Beyoncé and that it that enough because she is pretty and easily catches our attention and so the background more or less blends in with the surroundings of Beyoncé the browny colour connotes dreamy and her surroundings seemed close like she is a small space.

Main Task Introduction

I am now starting my main task and this task is to design and create a Music Magazine Cover and Contents Page using my skills that were sharpened and new skills found while completing the pre-liminary task.

In my evaluation I am going to describe what I have been doing in the project set for the Pre-luminary Task.

The forms and Conventions of my media product are quite similar to products the Media has produced in this case a College Magazine Front Cover Design and Contents Page. For example on my Front Cover there is a Selling line which is ‘Everything a top C.T.K student needs to know!’

Also there is a price tag in the Right-hand corner of the magazine which is used quite a lot. I put what number issue it was and the date, it has a mast head at the top of the magazine which is also quite popular in magazines these days I also added a barcode and I think I added my bit to it which was the gradient tool because not many magazine covers fade from one colour to the next. So I would say for the majority of the magazine I have followed closely a long the lines of a conventional method. My contents page is quite a simple one and I think the way it is set out is a simple design but it looks slightly different than a normal design because I put a bit of my own design into it. The text is clear easy to read there are page numbers.

My media product represents the social group of teenagers who go to college. The sense of reality created is with the image is a young black girl with a book in her hand showing that she is learning the props used connotes she is learning she is casually dressed which is a typical college student clothes for the vast majority of colleges. Her NVC is clearly showing that she is happy and contented jewellery looks pretty basic and earrings are typical earrings worn today. The text used is text easy tot read and quite nice to look at and so I didn’t really include any slang accept for the word ‘hubbub’ which means what’s all the noise as it were. Also I put important things on the cover for example ‘coursework Deadlines and a lot of people want to know this. Sports News is another topic with big news. I advertised the LRC and at the end of giving short bullet points on it said ‘ALL FOR YOU!!’ in capital letters so its really leaping off the page to catch someone eye. The Christ the king text I spent quite some time on because in my mind’s eye I wanted it look to flashy and stand out form the writing used on the Front Cover I got the look I wanted for it. Also the girl on the front is quite attractive. My Contents page was basic but it has a few pictures of students from around the college all of what they are wearing are clothes more or less worn today they are all smiling some are holding books with others showing that they are in a learning and sharing environment. The text used was clear and legible writing. I decide to use normal language to appeal to a wider range of teenagers because not all teenagers understand or use slang and so for the benefit of those who don’t use slang I decided to use Standard English. The students that I took pictures of are the age group I want to appeal to.

Lastly I have learnt a lot about using the Adobe Photoshop for example the functions of the tools like I used the magnetic Lasso to cut my student from her original picture and place on a blank canvas I used the gradient tool to get the effect of one colour fading to another. I used the smudge tool to soft the area of where I smoothen out the student’s hair. I changed the blending options on most of the text put on the Front Page. But I think if I was more experienced in using Adobe Photoshop then I would have been able to show off more of my skill but I have known quite a bit in Photoshop enough to make my magazine look conventional. I think if I was to re-do this project I would give myself more time to use and understand the Packages E.G Adobe Photoshop I am using.

Draft 3 Contents Page

This is my design of my contents page and I am ahppy with it and i find that although it didnt go to how my scanned in draft looks I think it looks better than I had planned it to be all the pictures in were taken around college.Also I put page numbers in to make it look more realistic

Draft2 Contents Page

This is my second draft and basically in this I have added extra text and now i just to add all the other text to make my contents page complete.

Draft 1 contents page

This is the first draft of my contents page my colours are the same as my front cover but the gradient is going in the opposite direction and in both of my draft that I scanned in I said that 'contents page' is going to be vertically down the side and also I said that there would be a a diagonal line of pictures going down the side and I have changed this because I didn't like how it turned out so I changed it to a horizontal line at the top of the page it looks smarter and more tidy.Also from looking at other magazine contents page helped me to make this decision.

Draft 6 college cover

This is my finished design of my College Magazine cover and I am pleased with it. I think that it looks like a real college magazine it has everything I said in my previous draft it would have. The student is just about a medium close up and the price tag is in the right-hand corner of the page. Also I used the sponge tool to soften the student hair and took some bits away.

Draft 5 college cover (photoshop effects)

This is one of my final drafts for my college magazine cover and I 've had a few more ideas of what to put on the magazine from looking at other magazines so I need to add a price tag and and a the date and what number issue it is. Also I need to make the student look like she is in a medium-close up because that is what was requested in this project.

Draft 3 college cover (photoshop Effects)

This is my third draft and as you can see I have made alot more progress my added alot more text and and chosen my colours carefully and kept to the colour scheme of blue and white.Now I am thinking of what my magazine needs to look like a proper magazine so I may need to put what issue it is also the date and a price tag putting all of this text in i have used the horizontal type text tool.

As you can see I have added more text in this draft and I have decided on sticking to the colours Baby blue(Sea blue) Navy Blue and White.For the background I used the gradient tool and at this point not to sure if i am going to keep the Christ the King Text as it is I am probably going to change it to a more thicker and bolder font.

Draft1 College cover (photoshop effects)

This is my first draft for my college magazine cover as you can see I have first used the Magnetic Lasso tool to seperate my student from the nature background and put her onto a blank canvas I used the horizontal type text tool to add all of the words and used the create warped text for 'Catchup Time' flag effect for the Selling line I used the blending options played around with them and added the drop shadow effect and also the gradient overlay effect also.

This is a picture setting is in a classroom you can tell by the tables and chairs in the room presumably a classroom the dress is very casual and the majority of students dress quite casually for college.The props are quite significant it connotes that she could be a studentHer facial expression is happy but concentrated and think this could be a potential picture for my College Magazine Cover.

This picture is quite similar to the next picture but this is showing the picture at another angle the lighting is high key although the student isn't facing the camera you can still see the facial expressions and it seems that she is deep in thought and very focused the props also give you a sense that she could be a student the setting shows that she could be in a classroom.

This picture is a very good picture because you can really tell this is a student.The lighting on the student helps you to see the students expression which shows the NVC that the student looks content and focused.The way she is dressed is quite causal but is the normal dress for a student.The setting shows that she is in a classroom because you can see tables and chairs behind her.

I think this picture could a potential for my magazine cover but i would have to edit it because it is abit more than a medium close-up I think it would be a mid-shot.The lighting is high-key you can see where the student is what her facial expressions are which shows that she is quite happy and what she is wearing is quite student-like and casual and the props are conntoting that she is a student. Also the setting is on some steps presumably in a playground.

Draft1- college magazine cover

This is my first draft of my College magazine cover I am not sure of what I want it to look like but I know that I want a student on the front holding a book of some sort.This is a very basic draft but I will probably be able to elaborate better in the futre drafts.

Draft2-College Cover

As you can see the draft is much better than before and its much clearer I wasnt sure if I should keep Christ the king at the Top of the magazine or should I change it for the name of the magazine also i added in the barcode in the right-hand corner of the page I have added a few more things on the magazine.

Draft3-College Magazine Cover

This is what I want my final draft to look like I have made the student alot bigger and decided to change the Christ the King that was at the top of page for the title of the magazine which is called 'Catchup Time'.Also in the background I want there to be a camera or a group of students doing something to get a real feel that the picture was based in a college.

Draft1- college Contents page

In this draft this is my first draft for my contents page but i'm not totally convinced about the contents page title down the side i might change the writing to bubble writing. I was thinking of putting a strip of boxes down the side or diagonally like so in the picture.

Draft2- college magazine cover

This is the second draft of my contents page as you can see there is a diagonal strip of boxes going through the middle of the page and in these boxes I want to put pictures of students from around the college in these boxes and the contents page writing is goin to be horizontal placed on the page in bubble writing.

This question shows that most of the people that took part in the survey are female therefore I have to consider that the results could be biased.

In this question it clearly states that the majority of people are sixteen years old and so this could have an affect on my results.

This question offers positive feedback because most people would pick a magazine and would want to read it and it shows you that people are quite open.

This question shows that alot of people are interested in the lives of the celebrities as well a activities going on in college.

Q5-Would you be prepared to pay?

This question shows us that most of people are not willing to pay so this needs to be considered as a prime factor.

In this question it tells us that there is and equal amounts of people who want the magazine monthly and fornightly.

A vast majority of people chose A calender of coursework deadlines this is a pretty obvious so that they can keep a record of when exams are.

Q8-What would attract you to the front cover?

This question shows that more people are not willing to pay for the magazine so that a factor that you would have to consider but also the people who selected other are saying that if there were certain celebrities names on them they are more likely to pick it up.

Q9-What genre are you interested in?

The majority of people chose mixed genres so that they can get abit of everthing.This will also be helpful for the magazine because they can focus on a range of topics instead of one so it will be more likely to appeal to a wider range of people.

This question surprised me because the majority of people arent bothered about having to go to a particular place to get the magazine I would've thought that people would have prefered for the magazine to be in a particular place.

Q11-If the magazine doesn't come up to your expectations would you give feedback?

It clearly shows in this graph that people would not notify the magazine if it doesnt come up to the expectations.Therefore there wouldn't really be any feedback to help the magazine get better.

Textual analysis

PROPS

The female in the picture has a glass beaker in her hand this would indicate that she is doing science also she is wearing some protective glasses these would be used for an experiment in science so this is another indication that she could possible be doing science.

COSTUME
The costume I would say looks pretty casual so she could be a student doing an experiment in college

LIGHTING

The lighting seems high-key lighting because you can see everything around her but you can also tell that the natural light is coming from above because there is a shadow underneath her chin.

SETTING
The setting isn’t quite clear it seems to be blurred out which probably connotes that the setting isn’t important for us we need to focus on her. But you can see in front of her a tray full of looks like glass bottles probably containing ingredients used for the experiment her surroundings look like she in a lab.

NVC
Her facial expression is quite content it looks like she is giving the glass beaker in her hand total attention I think we can see a slight smile so it seems that she is interested and happy doing this experiment.

THE FONT TYPE
The font type is quite bold and stands out in the picture especially as it is in white it stands out more and is easier to read.

Introduction

I will be using my blog to post my work on the introductory task that has been set is i have to create and design the front page and contents page of a college magazine.
